I think and write about fragrance a lot for work so I’m really excited to delve into this subject here.
What’s up with people thinking rose is a scent for old ladies? There are a few rose-based gems that make my cult fragrance list - I’d call them “new classics” but I hate that type of jargon. Read/smell for yourself:
1. Chloé Rose is a limited edition twist on the original. It’s a real rose bouquet, with lily of the valley adding freshness and amber adding sexy warmth - like a bad ballerina in a bottle. Look at this and tell me you don’t want it on your dressing table? $85 here.
2. L'Artisan Parfumeur Drôle de Rose(trans. funny rose … or even better, funny pink) reinvents rose the way Dita Von Teese reinvented burlesque - retro, but WOW … a boudoir floral with leather undertones. $95 here, or grab a sample for $3 (lasts many a Friday night).
3. Kept by MCMC Fragrances. Anne McClain, an up-and-coming classically trained perfumer working out of Brooklyn, took the idea of the kept woman and turned it around. This is for the woman that keeps herself - and I think it’s also for the woman that wears perfume for herself (don’t you? I love smelling my sleeves during the day… is that weird?) and if someone else likes it on her - bonus. Red rose blended with black tea with spicy, warm base notes. $45.00 here.
Also … right now I’m wearing Montale Roses Musk. This stuff is crazy expensive but it smells like meeting the sexiest man alive in a desert and drinking mint tea with him in a bath drawn with rosewater. Sold? It’s $140 here. I have the $3 sample. And I’m also in my apartment, drinking Decaf Lipton. Alone.
What’s your take on rose - love it or hate it? Any favorite rose products/scents?
