On the topic of niche brands that make us smile but are also genuinely awesome… have you heard of A Beautiful Life? We spotted them at Urban Outfitters and now we are trying everything. So expect a few more glimpses into things they make after this fragrant post…

A Beautiful Life has a collection of perfumes that are cutesy-cool and unlike anything you’ve ever smelled. Pictured above (a top Lisa Frank #FBF) is their signature I Heart Unicorns and a new one called Composition - in lure of the BTS season.
We are a little obsessed with I Heart Unicorns… mostly because it’s a delicious and juicy melange of bright aromas that send us straight back to the 90’s when all of our paper products had a bit of rainbow on them. If Lisa Frank had a smell, it would be I Heart Unicorns.
Composition captures the bitter-sweet essence of going back to school with a hint of tart green apple and a whole lot of crisp paper and cozy sweaters. Get anywhere near this fragrance and I guarantee you will be rushed into a wave of middle school nostalgia.

file under / from the office

I figured a Friday before a long holiday weekend (and the last official weekend of summer) might be a great one for this call to action in the form of the yummiest fragrance (if we do say so ourselves - we made this at our day job for our besties at Francesca’s).

Go Fearlessly. Love Wildly. Spray Liberally.

(seriously, especially the last one).

The scent is a super delicious gourmand (that means it smells sort of like you want to eat it - but not in a childlike, candy way). It’s starts with Italian bergamot, which is a warm citrusy scent, then blends into tonka bean and vanilla, and finishes with sheer musks. It lasts forever on skin and makes you feel basically like the dog in this photo.

Does This: Makes you want to do like it says on the box, and smells great
Is This: Story by Francesca’s Go Fearlessly, Love Wildly, Spray Liberally
Get This: Exclusively at Francesca’s (in store and online)
Price: $18 for 1 oz … I mean, seriously!

ATTN FRAGRANCE JUNKIES // we have something wonderful for you..

Finding a signature scent (though crucial) is not the easiest thing to do. It requires some thought, some consulting of others, and lots of testing. Scentbird is a new online fragrance world that helps you accomplish all three of these steps towards nailing down your signature scent. It’s extremely convenient and a little addicting.

The process goes as follows…

First click in and enter three fragrances that you love. From those three fragrances, Scentbird recommends additional perfumes based on your taste. Then you can select any bottle (or two, or three) and Scentbird will ship it to you for free with a sample to try.(!) After 5 days of testing and consulting of others, you can keep what you love and/or mail back what you don’t free of charge.

Use offer code “CULTPERFUME" for $15 off your signature scent from Scentbird and please - let us know what you choose!

File Under // Fragrance Finds

Yesterday I made my unofficial monthly stop - okay, my every time I walk by stop - into C.O. Bigelow and found a treasure that I needed. (needed)

The find - a line of Eau de Toilettes called Societe de Senteur by West Third Brand. Sidenote: eau de toilette’s are slightly less concentrated than perfumes, think body mist with a little more umph.

I was initially attracted to the minimalist black & white label with scripty fonts, then the names reached out and grabbed me. “Wanderful” “7 Heartbreaks” “Ropes & Sails” “Road Trip” and “Love First.” I wondered - how does Societe Senteur interpret a road trip? Each fragrance has a completely enveloping top that pulls you in and makes you want to keep smelling until you see how it turns out. The one I walked out with was Love First

You can imagine, love comes with lots of flowers so this scent is entirely floral with a little patchouli and musk. I’m normally not a real floral type of gal but this EDT smells like falling into a bed of petaly soft flowers, and then rolling around in them. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t love that..

Does This: Summery light floral fragrance that smells like rolling in flowers
Is This: Societe de Senteur Love First
Get This: In store at C.O. Bigelow or WestThirdBrand.com
Price: $32 for 2oz

File under // Ask An Artist - an oldie but goodie, very excited to bring it back.

We love fragrance, so we were stoked to chat with Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors - a niche perfume company that creates some truly unique scents with unforgettable names and stories. Here is what Josh had to say…

What was the first fragrance you ever owned/loved?
Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet
, it has a decidedly non-sephora-perfume-y fragrance that is absolutely absurdly arrogant. To this day, I have never smelled anything that is so distinctly austere in it’s own pompous attitude.

How did you get your start in fragrance?
For most of my life, I was in the “boycott perfume" camp. It wasn’t until I snagged my first bottle that I started diving in and going overboard learning all I could. Once I realized that perfume was an art form that had so many manifestations and associations, I was completely hooked.

I love the story telling concept behind your line, and how you think of scent as an art. Was there anything in particular that led you to use this concept as the foundation for Imaginary Authors?
It was really important to give the scents more than just the fragrance to be able to chat about the magic that is inside the bottle. The scents come first, and then we will wrap stories and images around the scent to help explain exactly why it’s so fun.

Which one of your fragrances do you wear the most?
I’m really happy with Cape Heartache for the winter months, and I think Violet Disguise is perhaps my best designed scent. It starts off with a muted dark plum and it’s magical as it dries down to a labdanum amber base.

Have you noticed any olfactive trends recently that you find exciting?
I’ve been having a lot of fun making particularly masculine fruit scents. Lots of ladies are particularly excited about heavier masculines for just this reason, and so I feel like i’m working backwards a little bit by making heavy masculines for women and flowers and fruits for men.

What are some of your favorite raw ingredients when experimenting with new fragrance combinations? Some of my particular favorite notes are iris, leather, bergamot and linden. Fig oil isn’t something that is made naturally, but currently, i’m having a lot of fun working with the concept of a fig accord and blending it with a very rich and creamy accord. It’s completely delicious!

Big thanks to Josh for chatting with us - make sure to check out Imaginary Authors and explore some of the stories HERE

Remember our Commodity Goods giveaway not too long ago? Well this is the follow up. Our winner really dove in and took a few weeks to wear and experience all of the scents. Below is the (simplified) breakdown of what she thought of her top 5 women’s & men’s - she has quite the nose!
SIDENOTE: Have you tried the Commodity fitting kit? It’s affordable ($5 - $10), it’s fun, and it’s a really great way to test out what could be your next signature scent. No I’m not promoting. I just genuinely enjoyed the Commodity experience! If you go for it (which you totally should) tweet us and tell us what you think @CultOfPretty.

Women’s Top 5
Dew - Clean & fresh scent, like pulling a shirt right out of the dryer and still being able to smell the lingering clean after you put it away.
Ivy - A lightly sweetened version of true ivy. Similar to a cup of tea you would brew when you’re under the weather.
Magnolia - The most fresh and floraly of the bunch. Reminiscent of spring time in Colorado (this was her favorite and she happens to live in Colorado.)
Tea - Actually smells like tea! But refreshing and soothing similar to a green tea with a little light orchid/chestnutty-ness.
Mimosa - A very complex scent, starts sweet and then transforms into a tarter version of itself. It was definitely a little intriguing.
Mens Top 5
Wool - Very sweet and refreshing, easy to wear, and enjoyable!
Moss - Borderline of sweet and woodsy, what comes to mind when you think of a true cologne - for those who like big scents.
Cloth - Smells like a really great smelling man! Everyone noticed the scent (which was being worn by a guy btw) and gave positive feedback.
Cane - Very enjoyable. Smells like a mix of perfume and cologne because it has a woody aspect but also a sweet lightness to it.
Book - This one was interesting because it really does smell like a book! Could be a sexy scent if you enjoy vintage old works of literature. ;)

Ditch the pine tree air freshener, Febreze, or that offensive-spritzing plug in. We found something that ups the ante in the home smelling department. And it happens to be très fancy.

Agraria is known for making home spaces (and bathrooms alike) smell fantastic, whether it be in the form of potpourri, diffuser, candle, bar soap or even, tassel

Agraria’s scented tassels (above) are called TasselAire™. They come in a cylinder with a little bottle of oil and small syringe. Apply oil to tassel at your leisure (no need to go crazy, it’s pretty fragrant). There are eight different scents. The one hanging from above door handle and now by my desk is balsam. A deep woody cedar with a good hit of spice, a very regal scent that I associate with mansions like this one.

We love that it’s a home decoration objet and a smelly thing in one - every room can use a tassel.

Does This: Makes your abode smell wonderful
