File under: Sainted or Overrated / Jao Goe Oil Review

When I started this blog, I promised myself I’d avoid the obvious: shout-outs to products so often listed as “cult” that they’re practically mainstream.  You know the types … Carmex, Egyptian Magic, Elnett, etc.

But having received so many “is this worth the hype?” ask me anythings, I’m going to start today with a question you may have asked yourself about this cult classic body oil.  For $36, should you Goe there?

Jao’s Goe Oil is a pure moisturizing oil with no fillers - and an extremely cult-ish formula feel that goes from cream to oil almost instantly in your hands.

I’m a huge fan of Monoi oil, and this melt-on-your-bod, not-in-the-box oil smells lightly of that Tahitian nectar of the gods, but it’s made up of much more: a total of 28 plant, fruit and flower oils and butters. Supposedly the formula is similar to sebum, which sounds seriously gross until you see how your skin drinks it in.

It’s ideal for slathering over bare legs and arms before you head out, because it creates a very natural and long-lasting glow.  The first time I tried it was on a set - the makeup team used it to de-ghostify my legs - and I’ve been using it ever since.  I can feel and see the difference.

The bottom line? It’s pricey, but if you’re suffering from dry winter skin or live in a place where bare legs get a daily showing (you’re so lucky), I can definitely cosign this cult purchase.

Does this: Ultra-pure, multi-purpose, cream-to-oil cult classic

Well, it’s that special time of year when I reveal my legs and people run screaming.  That zombie shade of pale certainly does nothing for me, and thus before I went to Austin last month for Texas Style Council, I picked up a card in my lobby left by a mysterious stranger promising a natural glow.

Her name is Laura. She lives on the 7th floor. She lives downstairs from me.  And yes, I had totally seen her before … but I had no idea she was a PROFESSIONAL AIRBRUSH TANNING EXPERT. (She’s also a pro makeup artist and blogger - see it all at Lo & Co.).

If you’ve never done airbrush tanning because you were terrified of turning orange, rethink everything.  This is not the booth where you walk in, hit the Oompa Loompa button and pray.  This is bespoke, custom-mixed, hand-applied glow-giving tanning.

The spray is misted on by hand in the comfort of Laura’s super-chill space, and develops over about 8 hours.  You’re instantly tan, but the surface color washes away when you shower and you’re left with color that lasts about a week. (You can extend it with Jergens Natural Glow-type products). You can strip down or bring a cheap bikini you don’t care about, or undies, if you want natural-looking tanlines.

I’ve done airbrush tanning before so I knew it was amazing, but Laura’s application was especially flawless and I loved that we decided to go light.  It looked very natural, especially my face.  A perfectly tanned face??  So transformative!  Bonus: Laura only uses organic tanner.

Normally the service is $80 (which is very reasonable for NYC), but if you mention Cult of Pretty it’s only $60.  If you have an event or whatnot, don’t buy a new dress - get a tan.  Trust.

Also, if you come be in touch and I’ll come down and say HI!

Does this: Flawless, bespoke, organic airbrush tanning in NYC
Is this: Laura Nadeau of Lo & Co.
Get this: Contact Laura here for an appointment - located in lower Manhattan right by the N, R, 1, and 5 trains
Price: $60 if you mention Cult of Pretty

Ugh, what the hizz happened, it’s WINTER you guys. We missed the exit for Fall like 10 degrees ago.

Anyway, let’s pretend for a minute that this isn’t happening.  Please find visual aid above and olfactory aid below:

I really have a thing for coconut-scented anything-for-my-body.  I’m constantly plotting a way to move to Hawaii and spend my days slathered in coconut body oil on the beach, so I guess I try to recreate the feeling in my cold NY apartment.

La Licious is a cult brand of all-natural bath and body products, with sulfate-free formulations that all feel quite different from what’s out there.  The Coconut Cream Whipped Body Soap (non-foaming) is like slathering icing on your body, between the amazing scent and the rich skin-feel.  If you only try one item, this is the one to get because I’ve never felt a body cleanser like it.

If you’re not a coco-nut (harhar), they have a wide array of alternative vacations in a bottle including Tahitian Flower, Lily Mango and Peppermint.

Does this: All-natural, sulfate free vacations in a bath & body bottle
Is this: La Liscious Coconut Cream Collection

Price: From about $18.00 (8 oz body wash)

When I see something that would make a great hostess gift I always wish someone would invite me to their beach house already I could be like Oprah’s buddy Colin Cowie, who has a closet in his pad that’s stocked with pre-wrapped candles and little gifts for those unexpected invitations [dahling].
Anyway, these are not rocks, they are soaps made with soya bean, sesame oil and other natural goodies.  They’re gentle enough for face and body.  And SO PRETTY for the fancy pants that invites you to their beach house this summer.

This is smart.
It’s virtually impossible for me to actually get tan, and that’s OK with me!  But I have these great coral shorts … a [whomp whomp] trumpet plays when I put them on though.  I couldn’t live without tinted moisturizer for my face, but when it comes to body tints/self-tanners, I’m extremely wary.  I feel like it looks like stage makeup.  I’m not trying to look like I have a different skin color, just a better skin tone.
This Pretty Peaushun Body Lotion really is that tinted moisturizer solution that provides evenness and pretty skin without making you look like you’re wearing panty hose. Plus, I love the packaging and it comes in a fairly decent range of tones, including an untinted version.
Does this: Acts like a tinted moisturizer with subtle highlighting to even and enhance your … body skin?  You know what I mean.Is this: Pretty Peaushun Body LotionGet this: AbovePrice: $36.00 for 8 oz.

Well, this is a far cry from my last travel items shot, but the reality is being sick isn’t pretty - but it is (hopefully) preventable.
I am off to L.A. tomorrow am and this array has been added to my toiletry bag.
Airborne Formula | Boiron Homeopathic Cold Calm | Young Living Deep Relief Essential Oil Roll-On | Cepacol Sore Throat Lozenges | Burt’s Bees Hand Sanitizer | Generic Daytime Cold Relief | Emergen-C Joint Health
What do you guys take to ward off a cold?  Wish me luck - it might be allergies? : )

These are not solid perfumes.  They are MINI-DEODORANT STICKS

I love anything small-ified, and given it’s so disgusting and sweaty in NYC right now, I’ll take all the help I can get. The genius thing is if you put great fragrance in your pits, the warmth really helps emit scent [sorry, but it seems true, right?].  There are not enough unique-smelling deos in the world, so these make me happy.

The Twice Shy scent is my favorite - like a fresh bouquet mixed with a creamsicle.

There are other products too, including a deo-duster formula, and a cooling body mist with aloe and witch hazel (which I will be bringing on my next plane ride - it’s also nice and small).

Does this: Mini all-natural deodorant stick with pretty scents
Is this: MBeze Deodorette (or on the travel-sized site 3Floz here)
This big: 0.3 oz
Price: $10.00

Happy Friday.  Here’s to staying cool and unstinky this weekend.

Thank you to the MBeze team for sending these after I discovered them on tumblr.

You guys, it’s official.  I’m off-white beige tan. As usual, this didn’t occur during any laying out sessions - it’s all about walking around on the street for me.  Basically, my forehead and forearms are brownish.  Fore the win!
I discovered this ingenious Guerlain tan-extending product in British Elle and I’m ordering it now.  Read the copy and weep with desire:
A serum—highly concentrated in Tan Booster active and enriched with a soothing complex—to add to any moisturizer and turn it into an after-sun tan extender.
How to use:- Face application: add 2 drops in any skincare face product.- Body application: add 4 drops in any body lotion.
I mean … need I say more?  Brilliant.
